Leigh in action

SLSWA President Peter Atkinson presents the award

Leigh Buchan - "The quiet achiever"

Leigh is one of City of Perth's and WA's most successful beach competitors, winning 13 State Championships in the beach arena, including a record six consecutive Open Beach Sprint titles between 1977 to 1982 and the junior/senior beach sprint double at the 1978 State Championships.

A key member of the City of Perth Beach Relay team, he withdrew from the team during the 1980 Australian Championships, after sustaining an injury in the semi-finals. The team went onto win the gold medal. This incident epitomises Leigh's priorities in his competitive career, club first, team second and Leigh Buchan third.

In 1981, Leigh was rewarded with an Australian silver medal with the relay team, and after retirement in 1985 continued his competitive success as a coach. As a coach, Leigh has an even more outstanding competitive record. His charges have includes such champions as Brett Slocombe, Nicole Skelton and Renée McCabe who along with numerous others have achieved 19 open state gold medals, 9 open Australian Championships medals and 2 World Championships golds under Leigh's guidance.

Stanley Jacks - " March Past mentor"

Stan Jacks is recognised as the mentor for March Past coaches in WA. Over fifty years, Stan's coaching record in march past is impeccable, with 18 State Titles to his credit, with both City of Perth and Scarboro.

In 1940, as a sub junior, Stan was a member of the winning City of Perth R&R team, and further showed his swimming prowess winning bronze in the sub-junior surf belt title.

In 1958, the State Championship March Past gold medallists, City of Perth, coached by Stan, headed to the Australian Championships to win the elusive March Past gold. Unfortunately, with 0.2 deduction they had to settle for silver.

Stan's reputation as a successful coach filtered up and down the coast with demands from numerous clubs to coach their March Past teams to state championship gold. In fifty years he has won a total of 25 gold, 11 silver and 1 bronze medal in March Past at the State and Interstate Championships and trained numerous other march past coaches and judges.
