The main competition area, Sunday 14th. Note the imminent arrival of rain from the left hand side!
Other City competitors in the event were Eoghan McKenna, who finished 6th in the Open Men's competition; Harry Lewer, sixth in the Under 15 Men's; and Shannon Reynolds and Shelby Warren, 8th and 9th in the Under 15 Women's. Conditions were quite windy again, making for rough conditions and challenging racing. Photos of Champion Lifesaver action
In the oldies arenas at the Masters champs, Wal Walker won gold in the 2km Run, while John Wilkie and Rob Jenkinson picked up a bronze in the double ski. Surf conditions are still rough, with plenty of carnage to be seen in the boat arena. Cyclone watch is still active, and anything could happen by the weekend.
Alison was never challenged after taking the lead early in the race, and maintains her status as the only person ever to have won this event since its introduction in 2005. Also in the 2km Run, Andrew Mosel was fourth in the Open Men's division, and Aaron Minervini sixth in the Under 19. The Under 17 First Aid team also competed today, finishing in sixth place. Late in the afternoon Melissa Benson swam in the final of the Women's Belt. Unfortunately, despite being seen as fourth by several different people from the club, Mel wasn't in the top six in the official standings. We've heard a lot this week about how wonderful it is to be back at Kurrawa, the HOME OF THE AUSSIES, but about half of us are leaving it again tomorrow having been relocated to Kirra due to the unsuitability of the conditions.
The sprints and relays were run on Saturday. After some initial misgivings about continuing the carnival, the City team got into action. Dean Scarff medalled in the Open Men's Beach Sprint for the fourth consecutive year, finishing in third place. In the Under 19 Women's sprint, Montana Ardon also finished third. The highlight of the sprints was the Under 17 Women's final, in which Gabby Murphy won the gold medal. Next came the relays, with the City girls in the Under 17 and Under 19 finals. The Under 17's looked in good form, but a baton drop put them well behind. Some great runs brought them very close to the medals but they finished up in fourth place. The Under 19's also ran fantastically to finish in second place, just inches away from gold. On Sunday morning a large contingent of City members marched in the Grand Parade while thousands attended the memorial service for Queenscliff's Saxon Bird. The only events held were the Beach Flags, with the City runners again well represented. In the Open Men's final Dean Scarff just missed out on the medals, finishing in fourth place. Clancy Bradshaw was in the Under 15 Women's final, and performed well to finish fifth. The highlight of the day again came in the Under 17 Women's event, where both Gabby Murphy and Brittany Brymer made the final. Both were performing brilliantly and made it to the final three. Brittany was then knocked out after some time spent in discussions, protests and a re-run, finishing with the bronze medal. Gabby then went on to take the gold medal, the first time in our club's history that we have won two medals in the one event at an Australian Championships.
