City of Perth won an outstanding 42 gold medals as the State Championships concluded over the weekend. It was a couple of very hot days at Secret Harbour, with only the occasional small wave to liven up proceedings. ![]() Bernie Kelly Medallist Candice Falzon Candice Falzon was awarded the Bernie Kelly medal for her weekend's performance which included gold medals in the Ironwoman, Board Rescue, Tube Rescue, Surf Team and Taplin Relay, as well as medals in Board, Ski and Surf Races. Melissa Benson was also outstanding with five gold medals from five events in the water, while Jade Whitehead picked up seven golds across Open and Under 19 events and was second to Candice in the Ironwoman. The men's team were also dominant in the water, winning the Surf Team and Tube Rescue events. Andrew Mosel destroyed the field to win the Board Race by a huge margin, and teamed up with Ben Carrick and David Graham for gold in the board relay. Ben Carrick won the Board Rescue in partnership with James Cohen, while in the Surf Race Simon Huitenga, James Cohen and David Graham took all three medals on offer. The Under 19's were also impressive with golds in the Surf Team, Tube Rescue, board Rescue and Board Relay, although they couldn't manage an individual title. Jordan Law did take out a couple of Under 15 races though, winning the Surf Race and Tube Race. On the beach, Alison O'Toole had no rival in the Open Female division of the 2km Beach Run, while Aaron Minervini also won the Under 19 Males. In the sprints Kelsey Golding won the Under 19's, and teamed with Montana Ardon, Jess Hawkins and Annalysse Davies for the relay. The Under 17 Female relay team of Indi Somerville, Amy Murphy, Brittany Brymer and Gabrielle Murphy also won gold, and Brittany and Gabby then were first and second in the Under 17 Beach Flags. ![]() Shane Bowler, John Foster, Steve Bowler, Marc Goodall, Chris Lebesmuehlbache The Senior R&R also chipped in with golds in the Five Person and Six Person events, the first winning of the R&R double since 2005.
