Having a car loaded with surf club gear can be handy, as Steve Reynolds discovered on the weekend. Having been to a bronze exam on Saturday morning, Steve had a club Oxy-Viva and first aid kit in his car. While driving along West Coast Drive in North Beach, he came across a scene with a lady lying off the side of the road and several bystanders helping out. The man who had got there just ahead turned out to be an off-duty ambulance officer, but with no gear. Steve jumped out with the first aid kit and oxy-viva and the ambo's eyes lit up. They put the lady, (in her sixties having a heart problem) on oxygen and called an ambulance, which took thirteen minutes to arrive. She felt really well after that time- the oxygen really helped. When the ambulance arrived, they couldn't believe the set-up, with the patient lying back with feet up on the first aid kit and oxygen mask already in place. |
