Old Methods Still Effective As Patrols Kept Busy
January 9, 2010

A big swell hit the beach on weekend, with a number of people being rescued on Saturday - with the appearance of some old-style rescue methods along the way.

The swell hit the coast on Friday and brought some big waves through to City. By Saturday morning the unstability of the sandbank directly in front of the clubrooms came into play, and after the big sets came through a big rip followed.

A number of unsuspecting swimmers found themselves dragged out of their depth, keeping some of our new SRC holders on patrol busy as they performed their first ever rescues throughout the morning.

At the other end of the experience scale, the senior R&R team were training in the area as well and had to interrupt their session to perform a number of rescues themselves. As they had the reel, line and belt right there and ready to go, we saw the first instance of this historical equipment being used in a rescue situation at City for at least a couple of decades.

By the end of the day twenty people had been helped from the surf at City, and patrols were busy again on Sunday with a number of suspected spinal and other injuries.
