States 2009
March 3, 2009

The 2009 State Championships were held on the weekend. City was again prominent, winning 50 gold medals and finishing second in the overall pointscore.

The 50 events won is the second-greatest performance in the club's history, behind only the 64 golds won in 2005, and is nearly twice last year's gold medal tally.

The standout competitor of the weekend once again was Alicia Marriott, who was rewarded with another Bernie Kelly Medal for her eight golds in the Open Women's area. Alicia won gold in the Women's Surf Race, Board Race, Ironwoman, Double Ski, Board Relay, Ski Relay, Taplin Relay and Surf Team events. The Open Women's Double Ski - being held this year for the first time - marked Alicia's 50th State Championship for City of Perth, confirming her place as our greatest competitor yet. (Having Beijing bronze medallist Lisa Russ on the back of the ski probably didn't hurt either.)

The strength of our Open Women's team is shown not only by Alicia's results - of the few events left in the water arena, our girls also won gold in the Board Rescue and Rescue Tube Rescue, and they filled the first four places in the Ironwoman.

Some of our new members this season were also standouts - Shinade and Jade Whitehead each won nine Gold medals, while David Graham won eight.

The beachies were perhaps a bit quieter this year by their recent high benchmarks. But the girls still managed to win five medals (including two gold) across the four Beach Relay events, picked up three golds in the Beach Flags and one in the Sprints, plus an assortment of silvers and bronzes. As the Under 19 girls go into the Aussies as defending champions, it seems their biggest threat might be coming from the Under 17s!

In the final washup we finished some eighty points behind Trigg, despite winning many more events. A quick look through the results shows a lot of areas where we simply weren't there on the weekend, so if we are serious about wanting to win the flag next year we need to begin plugging those holes over the winter months.

Medal Tally: 50 Gold, 29 Silver, 22 Bronze
