Competition Rules
December 15, 2008

The 33rd Edition of the Surf Sports Manual is now available to members. If you're involved in competition in any way, as a competitor, coach or official, you really should have a copy.

  • How many breaks are you allowed before being disqualified from an event?
  • What part of the body is the finish of a race judged on?
  • What are the requirements for a legal buoy touch in a belt race, tube race or board rescue?
  • If you have an Under 17 female in your Lifesaver Relay team, does that satisfy the requirement to have an Under 17 and a female?
  • Does a handler need to wear a club cap?
  • Which way do you turn the can in a board rescue? Left, right or doesn't matter?
  • What lifesaving awards do all members of a Champion Patrol team require?
  • Does an Under 19 Belt Race competitor have to have an Under 19 paying out at first line?
  • In a relay changeover, what if your feet are behind the line but your body is leaning over?
  • Do you have to have a club cap on your head and tied up at the end of an event?
  • What if you make your tag in a Taplin Relay from the wrong direction because you were running so fast you missed the changeover area?

If you are involved in competition in any way, you need to know the answers to these questions.

You may spend hundreds or even thousands of hours training for your event each year - surely you can take the time to know the rules of the event you are competing in?

All the questions above are things that have come up in competitions we have been involved with in the past few years (ask Simmo about the last one!), in some cases costing us State Championships.

If you find yourself involved in a dispute, you need to know. Protests must be lodged within minutes of an event finishing - you may not have time to seek out the answers. And don't assume that just because an Official says it, it must be right.

The 33rd edition of the Surf Sports Manual has now been released. New and updated rules are contained within the manual.

Manuals can be purchased on-line from Creata. The cost of the Manual is $22.72 plus GST.
