Denmark SLSC Turns 50
December 6, 2008

Last weekend the Denmark SLSC celebrated their 50th Anniversary. So what has that got to do with us at City? Quite a lot, in fact.

In November 1958, two people were drowned off the river mouth at Denmark's Ocean Beach, and the town community decided that they needed to do everything they could to stop such a tragedy happening again.

Moving with a speed that would stun the bureaucracies of today, the Denmark Surf Life Saving Club was formed at a public meeting just two days after the incident. Less than two weeks later, a team of instructors from City of Perth travelled to Denmark to begin training the new club's nine members.

Over the years that followed, City members made many trips to support the Denmark club in its development. The challenges of a country club can be very different to those faced in the city - Denmark SLSC had no electricity for many years, and had an IRB before they had a phone!

To mark the 50 year anniversary, a dinner was held in Denmark last weekend. In a measure of the strength of support that Surf Life Saving generates among its members, the dinner was attended by the President of Surf Life Saving Australia, the current and two former Presidents of Surf Life Saving Western Australia, and many members of other WA surf life saving clubs.

Also in attendance were City Life Members Ric Roberts and Ian Scott, members of that original instructional team that helped start things up fifty years ago.

As part of the evening's formalities, Ric Roberts was presented with his Life Membership of SLSA by national President Ron Rankin. It was a fitting occasion for the presentation, which recognised Ric's work in the development not only of the Denmark club but also many of the other WA country clubs.

So next time you see the Denmark Nippers sleeping in our hall on States weekend, they're not there just by coincidence. Say hello, and help to maintain the link between our clubs.
