Groyne to Groyne Beach Sprint
November 23, 2008

Ben Hewitt crossed the line first in a tight finish of the tough Groyne to Groyne Beach Sprint event on Sunday.

Ben Hewitt takes the lead late in the race
A soft sand run of nearly 500 metres from Floreat groyne to City doesn't sound like much fun, but a sizeable field took on the challenge.

Somerford Marathon winner Aaron Minervini and veteran Ben Hewitt set a hot pace early, running neck and neck although with a lot of beach between them - Aaron took the high road and Ben the low.

As their paths converged in front of the clubrooms, Aaron had a narrow lead, but a well-timed burst from Ben saw him take front position with less than a hundred metres to go. Having got in front, Ben nearly blew it with a stumble but managed to keep his feet and get to the line. Aaron crossed second, with Ken Tomczak third.

In the girls race Under 19 Phoebe George was first to the line, ahead of Candice Falzon and Shinade Whitehead.
