Froccer
20th July 2008

Scarboro has won their fifth successive Froccer Cup, defeating an undermanned City squad on Saturday afternoon.

In what seems to have become a Froccer tradition, the run of bad weather cleared up to be fine for the big match.

Things looked bleak right from the start when it appeared we might not even have eleven players to take the field at the start of the match. We managed to find outfits for a couple of Irish "exchange lifesavers" (aka ring-ins) and got underway. A couple of late arrivals gave us a small bench to work with, to the relief of our more senior members.

Abandoning an initial tactic to run the clock down and try to hold on for the draw, we actually played a bit of decent soccer early on. As the match went on, though, it became harder to match the extra legs, extra fitness and extra skills of the Scarboro squad.

Scarboro opened the scoring in the first quarter, but we equalised in the second and went to half time with a bit of hope that we might be able to steal the match.

In the third quarter, however, the game started to get away from us. A second Scarboro goal from a blatant handball led to some accusations of cheating from the Scarboro referee, but this was cancelled out a few minutes later when the City defence somewhow managed to con everyone that a third Scarboro goal had actually missed (luckily for us the video was inconclusive).

Scarboro dominated the rest of the third quarter but weren't able to score again. In the last quarter the City team knew they had to score to stay in the match, which led to a bit of neglect for the need to also have defenders. Inevitably, Scarboro were able to exploit the open City backline, and put through the sealer.
