City had another successful year at the State Championships with many outstanding performances, winning 27 gold medals.

Highlights of the weekend's events included wins by Simon Huitenga in the Open Men's Surf Race, James Cohen in the Under 19 Ironman, Alicia Marriott in the Open Ironwoman, winning the Open, Under 19 and Under 17 Men's Surf Teams, and the Under 19, Under 17 and Under 15 Women's Beach Relays and Dean Scarff's gold in the Open Men's Beach Flags.

But you don't have win gold to produce an outstanding result, and other worthy performances included the Lifesaver Relay's second placing, Simon Huitenga (again) third in the Open Ironman, Nipper Gabrielle Murphy ageing up for two individual beach medals in the Under 15's, and the Under 17 guys backing up to contest every Under 17 and Under 19 team event in the water.

We didn't have everything our own way of course, and for the first time in eight years finished the championships with more silver medals than gold. We finished second in every R&R event conducted, and almost every board rescue, while a silly mistake by a team member while handling cost our Open Men's Taplin a chance at gold.

Our final tally for the Championships was 27 Gold, 32 Silver and 20 Bronze medals, and we finished the carnival in second place overall.

Alicia Marriott's three championships made her the club's number one gold medal winner at State level. Alicia has now won 48 State Championships for City, while James Cohen has also moved into the club's top ten.
