Beach Development Plan
15th January 2008

Sometime this winter, the Town of Cambridge plans to start major works at our beach. This will include the creation of a dual use pathway running in front of the club to a small amphitheatre.

The club has been involved in the consultation process, including assisting the designers in developing alternative plans to accommodate busy use during peak periods, as well as maintaining important beach access for rescue gear, trailers, vehicles and surf boats.

The upgrade of the landscape works at City Beach includes a path in front of the club linking the existing paths to the north and south that would meet disabled access standards as well as provide a separate path for cyclists around the eastern side of the club. The landscape between the club and the southern kiosk includes barbeque areas, picnic tables and shade structures.

An amphitheatre is proposed immediately north-west of the club and consists mainly of concrete block walls with Toodyay stone cladding to tie in with the existing walls. It provides seating for spectators for casual events such as surf carnivals. To allow for a volleyball court orientated north-south more room is required and as a result the current design proposes the removal of the tip of the existing wall to the front of club. The designers are fully aware that any changes must maintain suitable access for ambulances to the first aid room. A path is proposed to run through the amphitheatre linking the existing path to the north and south of the club. The path meets disabled grades and is designed with a slight zigzag form to deter cyclists as well as achieving disabled access to each terrace.

The following designs clearly describe what will be taking place - Document 1 : Document 2 : Document 3

In general this will increase the public's awareness of the club and continue to cement the club's position as a key component of the local community.
