Surf Rescue Certificate
19th November 2007

On Saturday the 13th of October, seventeen "U/14s" sat an exam for their SRC under the watchful eye of our qualified assessors.

The exam is made up of a timed run-swim-run, a theory test, signals, basic first aid skills, surf rescue skills with the rescue boards and tubes and response to a given scenario by a patrol team.

From the 8th until the 12th October the group of girls and boys spent the second week of their school holidays working through the SRC course. Water skills were developed at Bold Park Pool and later in the week at City Beach. Other sessions were conducted in the club training rooms learning resuscitation techniques and theory.

The group was taught theory all week by Bec Cohen and Janelle Slattery for one morning. The water activities were run by Andrew Walker, Bec Cohen and Chris Murphy. Linda Walker played a big part in running the whole week and organising everyone. Many parents also came down to help out with supervision and morning tea. Many thanks to all involved.

At the end of the course Penny Cohen congratulated everyone and introduced the points system that enables us to earn our City Beach Jacket. Points can be earned by joining patrols, competing in carnivals, organising social events, joining in the club swim each Sunday morning, etc. That is, there are lots of great ways to be involved in the club at our age.

It was a very successful group who are now on their way to becoming good lifesavers, and all will be looking forward to a great season. Three people were unable to sit the exam at the time, but are in a good position to pass when they do. It is expected they will be joined by other U/14s who were away on the school holidays.
