Swimmers Flagging At Fremantle
11th February 2007

A carnival concentrating on team events was held on Sunday at Fremantle, giving many City competitors the chance for a good hit-out - as well as a chance to contest some of their less-familiar events.

Jeremy Stock outshone some of the States finest Beach Flaggers when he finished third in the Under 17 Beach Flags.

This was all that could top off the earlier embarrassment caused by Ben Carrick who completely outclassed the more fancied and well-credentialled Craig Simmonds in the Open Beach Flags, making it to the last five before bowing out.

Jeremy was slow to turn off the line, but made significant ground on other competitors on his way up the track. He capped off his magnificent performance with a massive dive and stretch around a poor Sorrento competitor who was none the wiser. The flag was thrust into the air by Jeremy to the crowd's applause.

The carnival provided a good opportunity for teams to shake off the rust. Beach Relays, Surf Teams, Taplins, Camerons and Board Rescues all gave our competitors an opportunity for team hit-out's.

It was great to see all the competitors present for the flags to watch Ben and Jeremy perform at such a high level, in their least fancied event.

On a more serious note the Open Surf Team served notice for the States finishing with all four swimmers in the first seven. The two three man Taplin teams went first and third but will need to lift an extra notch if the ski leg is drawn first at the States. The Open Board Rescue was a closely fought race with the lighter combination of Ben Carrick and James Cohen prevailing ahead of Jono Stock and Chris Timms in second.
