Life Membership - Paul Andrew
8th May 2004

Paul Andrew joined the City club as a twelve year-old Nipper in 1977. He returned to City as a Cadet member in 1979 and threw himself enthusiastically into club life.

Paul gained his Bronze Medallion in December 1980, his Advanced Resuscitation in January 1983 and his Instructors Certificate in November 1984. He was captain of the patrol that won the Ajax Shield in 1983.

In competition Paul tried a bit of everything, winning State medals in R&R and Champion Lifesaver events, but it was rowing surf boats that he really loved, finally breaking through for a State Title in 1994 in the Reserve Grade crew.

In helping around the club, Paul also tried a bit of everything. He was the Social Chairman, and some have said the Social Centre of the club in the 1983-84 season. The following season he was Assistant Manager of the Australian Titles team to Victoria. The year after that he became the Boat Captain, in 1987-88 the Chief Instructor, and in 1988-89 he was the Manager of the Club Team to the Aussies at Burleigh Heads in Queensland. Paul also returned to the Club Team Manager's position for the 2002 and 2003 titles.

In the early 90's, Paul had three seasons as club Handicapper, a period which saw the introduction to club swims of such highlights as the "bash cap" and the "m-course".

In 1998-99, Paul became club President, a position he held for five season - the longest unbroken term of any President since the 1960s. Paul's dedication to the job was outstanding. During his time as President, he oversaw a move toward a far more professional and businesslike approach to the running of the club. Club activity and membership lifted dramatically - there was an 80% increase in membership during this period, spread right across every area of the club, along with an increased volunteer base helping out with all areas of club administration.

For the first time the club developed a comprehensive Strategic Plan for our future direction, and this is being implemented now. The clubrooms received some major facelifts in the changerooms and gym areas, the hall and the administration block.

Throughout all this, Paul remained in touch with the grass roots membership of the club, and never lost sight of the basic reasons we all want to be here. He and Tania also found time to start a family, in between Paul's several "this is definitely the last one" years.

For his many years of dedication to the club, Paul has been presented with the highest honour we can give - Life Membership of the City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club.
