Life Membership - Joy Jardine
8th May 2004

Joy Jardine first became involved with the City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club in the 1960s when Rick Roberts recruited her son Colin as a double ski partner.

She soon became involved with the Ladies Auxiliary, a group of wives and mothers who provided support to the club by providing refreshments for patrolling members, and organising social and fundraising events. Joy was involved in the Auxiliary for over twenty years, many of them as President of the group. Under Joy's leadership, the Auxiliary grew to have more than fifty members in the early 1970s - a time when we probably didn't even have fifty active patrolling members.

The event which best demonstrates Joy's commitment was the 1971 Australian Championships, hosted by our club. Joy spent a full year in preparation for handling the catering for this event. Over the three days of the carnival, Joy and her group of workers served up over a thousand lunches, and many more morning and afternoon teas. The new clubrooms, completed just in time for the Championships, was decorated for the occasion.

That was just one of the many club occasions Joy was instrumental in organising. The were also countless social functions, raffles and children's Christmas parties.

Joy still attends the beach every Sunday morning to watch club activities. She now provides babysitting for some of the younger mums so they can continue to give active service to the club, and she takes a keen interst in the club's fortunes at the State and Australian Championships.

For her lifetime of dedication and service to the club, Joy has now been rewarded with Life Membership of the City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club.
