Groyne To Groyne Beach Sprint
1st February, 2004

A keen field of runners took on one of the toughest events on the club calendar on Sunday, the Groyne to Groyne Beach Sprint.

Running about 450 metres in the soft sand is pretty hard going, and there was plenty of heavy breathing going on at the finish line.

The girls went off first, and it was Marathon champ Alison O'Toole who led the way to the finish line. About thirty metres behind, Fiona Doney and Kim Lovett battled to be the first Under 16 home, with Fiona getting to the line just ahead. Alex Stock was the first Under 19.

In the men's events, Ben Carrick held off Duncan Jacob in the Under 16's. Jono Stock was the first of the Under 19's.

In the Open event Ken Tomczak went in as the favourite after Brett Slocombe cited "family duties" as reason not to start. Ken started strongly, but it was Matt "Superfish" Milner who took the lead halfway down and crossed the line in front. Bill Jarman came in first in the veterans.
