W.R. Somerford Marathon
17th November 2002

The courseKen Tomczak has recorded another win in the prestigious W.R. Somerford Marathon. It was Ken's eighth victory in the event and his seventh in succession, equalling the record of Warren Somerford himself which has stood for fifty years.

A large field took part in the event, watched by an equally large gathering of club sponsors and supporters.

The early leader was three time winner of the event Greg Mickle, who emerged from the water just ahead of 1996 winner Ash Nesbit. But Ken Tomczak was not far behind as they commenced the run toward Floreat, and when they returned to pass the clubrooms approximately three kilometres later Tomczak had a clear lead.

There was a little confusion at the southern end of the course, with the leaders missing the entrance to one of the sand dune paths. However, they soon corrected their mistake and no-one was seriously disadvantaged.

Soon afterwards, Ken Tomczak crossed the line, only about forty metres ahead of his sister Alison O'Toole, winning the female event for the tenth time in twelve years. They were followed by the young brigade, with Jono Stock and Ben Carrick the next to finish.

Congratulations to the placegetters, and to all the members who took part in this great club event.
